Dianne Cunnington Shuck (Collegeville, PA) After high school, Dee attended Simmons
College in Boston, MA,
graduated with a BS in Chemistry and got married two days later. John and Dee
started out in the Washington,
DC area where he worked in the
basement of the Pentagon (as an Army draftee) and she worked at the NIH
National Cancer Institute. After his discharge, they returned to Boston where he attended
graduate school and she worked in the Biochemistry Section of a consulting
firm.
They
spent the 1969-1970 academic year in Ann Arbor
at the University
of Michigan. The year was pretty exciting because it was
Bo Schembecher’s first year as coach of the Wolverines and they were able to
get tickets to all the home games. (This was the season that Michigan
beat Ohio State in the ‘upset of the century’.) It
was also the season of student unrest, campus boycotts and class disruptions.
Luckily, Michigan was on a 3 semester calendar
and most of the students were off campus when the Kent State
confrontation took place.
When their year in Ann Arbor was up, they took their VW camper and spent two
months visiting the cities and National Parks in northwest US and Alberta and British Columbia,
Canada.
It was a once in a life time totally great experience.
They ended up in Rochester, NY where John
taught mathematics at the University
of Rochester. Their
daughter Amy was born there and Dee was a stay
at home mother They were fortunate to be able to travel during the summers and
packed up Amy and the camper and revisited the northwest US and later the
southwest US.
In 1977, they moved to Collegeville, PA (outside
Philly, near Valley Forge). When they arrived here, the town was very
much like Brecksville during the 1950’s.
There was one traffic light, no fast food, and one shopping center. John taught mathematics and computer science
at Ursinus College for 25 years, and she worked for
several pharmaceutical companies as a bench chemist in Quality Control and
Research and Development. During that time she was merged out of a job twice
and finally ‘retired’ claiming she was too old to go through another job
search. John retired a few years after she did.
Their daughter
graduated from Hampshire
College with a double
major in English and Dance. (Where did
THAT come from?) Currently she is a
computer graphic designer and web site constructor for an advertising
agency. Amy is married and she and Ken
have one son. They live in Philadelphia
and they see them frequently. Jason was
born in August 2002, so Dee turned 60 and
became a grandmother in the same week!
A few years ago, they
did the Cleveland Area Nostalgia Tour revisiting sights and haunts in Cleveland, Brecksville,
and places in between. Her sister, Jill,
signed for part of the tour, including corned beef sandwiches at the deli in
Brecksville.
John and she now spend
their time trying to beat their 2 acres of suburbia into submission (which gets
harder and harder each year…) and traveling (although with the beating their
nest egg has taken that has been cut back).
Dee still hope to get to Paris! They enjoy watching figure skating and try to
attend the National Championships every other year or so. They attended both Cleveland championships (in 2000 and 2009).
