Thomas Longsworth (Brighton, MI) Tom always had an interest in athletics. His neighbor,
John Drew, a Brecksville alumnus, attended Miami University on a football
scholarship. He was a role model for Tom. Brecksville Football Coach Joe Vadini
selected Tom as the 1959-60 Team Captain. It was a good year for Tom and he entered
Miami in the fall of 1960. Tom had an outstanding
football career at Miami. He was selected All/Conference and again selected
team captain; this time by Coach Bo Schembechler. After obtaining his Bachelor's
Degree with a history/government major, he attended graduate school at Miami. He
also married Evelyn in 1965 and recently celebrated his 45th wedding
anniversary. He also served as an assistant coach to Bo Schemblechler while
obtaining his Master's Degree. He entered the US Marine Corps
in 1966 and went through officer training at Quantico. After Quantico, he was transferred
to Pensacola for Flight training. During both transfers Tom was offered an opportunity
to continue his football skills. At Pensacola that year the quarterback was
Roger Staubach, the running back Tom Longsworth. Tom served as a helicopter pilot in Viet Nam. He returned to civilian life in 1971 and became a pilot for General Motors Corp. He served as a corporate pilot for 30 years, retiring in 2003. He and his wife, Evelyn, live in Brighton, MI. They have two sons and a daughter-in-law: Eric, a Lt Colonel in the USAF who flies C-130's, and Blaine and wife Susan, attorneys in Ann Arbor, MI. |
