Lyn Vosatka
Lynes (Leesburg,
FL) “It sure doesn’t seem like
it’s been 50 years! I remember quite clearly all kinds of things from my 13
years in Brecksville schools. Does anyone remember the air raids in the hall,
recess with baseball games, huge snowballs being rolled around the school yard,
snowball fights, interclass baseball games, reenacting the Civil War (gray and
blue hats)? Also does anyone remember pep rallies, dances, scraping gum off
seat bottoms in the gym and running conversations about each other and our
teachers? We all received a wonderful education. The accomplishments of people
in our class are really impressive.”
Lyn started out with a year at Wittenberg University.
She then decided on nursing school. She had always wanted to be a nurse. She
has worked in many areas of nursing but loved anything with patient contact.
Lyn worked for 30 years. She married in 1965 and lived in Akron for eight years. They moved to
Broadview Hts. and then to Erie,
Pennsylvania. They wound up back
in Brecksville in time for their three kids to start school. Scott ’86, and
Julie ’88 are Brecksville grads. “It was fun having my kids in ‘my old
school’.”
Lyn divorced in 1986 and married Bill Lynes in 1989.
His three boys are also Brecksville grads; Jim ’81, Mike ’82 and Charley ’85.
“We went from six kids to six kids plus spouses plus nine grandchildren. “Its
fun keeping up with all of them. We try to spend time with them when we can.”
“We moved to Perrysburg,
Ohio (outside Toledo) in 1990 and lived there for the next
14 years. The town was small but reminded us of Brecksville. Alan, my youngest,
graduated from high school in Perrysburg in 1995. We retired in 1998 after Bill
had a stroke. He completely recovered. We had bought a motor home the year
before and took off for the first of many log grips. We fell in love with
traveling this way. We traveled to a lot of well-known places and also did a
lot of exploring of small, out-of-the-way places. We would ask someone in a
small town ‘What should we see here?’ There is always something to see. We
traveled two to three months at a time and went home for two months or so. Our
favorite overall trip was Rving to Alaska,
a true adventure.”
Lyn and Bill bought a place in Florida in 2003, as they had some friends
there and liked where they were. She found out later in 2003 she had bilateral
breast cancer. They took their Toledo
house off the market and Lyn had chemo and radiation for about a year.
“Moving to Florida
finally took place in 2004. Adrienne Schrauf Hastings lives around the corner
and Stu and Dot Bailey live around another corner. The Baileys lived around the
corner from my parents’ house in Brecksville. They moved in when we were in
ninth grade. I still have to behave in front of the teachers. Bonnie Slama, Barb
Schaal, Adrienne and I still get together.”
“In May 2009, my cancer had metastasized from the
breast to the eye and I was treated with radiation. They then discovered cancer
in the fluid around the lung. I am back on chemo as I write this bio in October
’09. Hopefully the chemo will control or stop the cancer. If our health is OK,
we will probably try to be in Ohio
for the reunion. I’m sure it will be a memory-filled fun time for everyone.”
[Lyn passed away on May 4, 2011. She was born on February 13, 1943, in Cleveland, Ohio. She
was a member of the United Church of Christ in Brecksville, OH. She was a R.N.
in numerous hospitals in Ohio, including Lutheran Medical Center in Cleveland
and St. Vincent Hospital in Toledo. She is survived by her husband, William P.
Lynes of Leesburg, FL; children, Scott, Julie and Alan Hopkins and Jim, Mike
and Charley Lynes; nine grandchildren, Noah, Miller, Makenzie, Jackson, Henry,
Carter, Bailey, Brad and Nicholas.]
["...remembering Lyn.... She
fought cancer for many, many years. Thanks to her tenacity she lived
several years beyond what any of her doctors expected. She had a zest
for life and travel that kept her going - all over the country.
Her three children and two grandchildren meant everything to her. Bill
Lynes, her husband, was her beloved traveling companion. They had
just purchased a new RV about one year ago and planned to continue
traveling despite her continued fight with cancer. She will be
missed by all of us who knew and loved her.... Sincerely, Adrienne
Schrauf Hastings"]
